Murder mystery games act as a way to diffuse the terror of murder. With their underlying formal interest and compositional fantasies, their intricacies of plot, they provide a moment to act out taboo and fantasy.

In the summer of 2010, a murder takes place; Red Bird invites you to witness the story of this death, who did it, and how.

When the first reported serial killers started wandering the streets of London, taking their victims into dark corners to cut, slash and shoot, a shadow was cast over humanity. While a new-found sense of terror arose, there was also intrigue, innuendo and rumour; did the victims deserve it?

Due to the unprecedented technological advances of the twentieth century, precipitously accelerated into the twenty-first, we have borne witness to death more than at any other time in history. Wars are no longer merely stories of distant, heroic battle; they have been brought home in flesh and blood. Countless loved ones lost to violent acts are immortalized in photos showing their brutal deaths.

The camera as a means of record arrived on the scene vested with a particular authority to arrest, picture and transform daily life… or daily death. Just as the camera has been our recorder and a helping hand to bear witness to our deaths and murders, it has also fed our fascination with mortality by providing detailed images of human brutality.

Three Photographers were asked explore these questions and ideas. Through a six image narrative that tells the story of a death, Alexis Gross, Ben Philippi and Mamoru Koboyakawa answer the query… who shot J. Doe?

Jully 22nd, to August 2nd, 12: 00 to 6:00, or by appointment

Vernissage: July 22nd, 19:00 to 24:00

To make an appointment email Naomi: redbirdstudios@gmail.com or call (514) 690-8289

Over the course of her one-month open door residency at the Red Bird Gallery, Kastner will be working on a series of works rendered in her unique collaging style, as well as furthering her artistic exploration of the accumulated detritus of daily life in the Mile-End by performing an autopsy on a bag of garbage.

Begun in 2009 in Kastner’s studio at the Red Bird, the series of collages systematically documents a single block of the alleyway directly facing the studio building, between Waverly and St. Urbain streets. The details of this familiar cityscape––the rusted staircases, laundry lines and garden fences––are built up using layers of everyday ephemera, including metro transfers, shopping bags, electrical tape and price tags. Also included in this exhibit is an 18-foot panoramic work, Cinema V, a tribute to the abandoned Empress Theatre, a magnificent crumbling neo-Egyptian movie house in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

«Alors, neuf artistes, pas de but, tu as quelque chose à ajouter à ça?»

the(y) may show se tient du 13 au 24 mai 2010, Red Bird Gallery, 135 Van Horne, Montréal.

The Wrong Feeling

Red Bird Gallery, 135 Van Horne O. April 23 – May 3, 2010.

Vernissage: April 23, 2010. 19h.
+Abortion Spa: Performance by Emily Pelstring, Sebastian Lange & Jessica Mensch. One night only: April 23, 2010. 21h.

The title of Jessica Mensch’s first solo exhibition of portraits, THE WRONG FEELING, refers to the assumptions that inform relationships between viewer, artist, and subject. In two series of large paintings, Mensch challenges the cultural norms of representation that support the fallacious notion that psychology and identity, particularly gender identity, can be read into the subject of a portrait.

In the first series of portraits, the artist has sought to circumvent the pitfalls of reductionism by capturing her subjects at unstructured moments, conscious of the performance of posing for a painting and yet not completely in control of it. These glimpsed views of the subject examine the shifting, unstable nature of identity while simultaneously addressing the dynamics of power implicit in both the act of posing and the act of looking.

The second series of paintings explores the tenets of Western Classicism that circumscribe the depiction of female subjects. With multiple references to art historical precedents, Mensch revisits the classical nude, switching the sitter’s gender in order to subvert the legacy of heteronormative objectification.

Abortion Spa is a 3-minute performance combining dance, live percussion, fantastical costumes, vocals, and black-light effects staged in a Dystopian future where the medical industry has enabled the conflation of cosmetic dermatology and reproductive healthcare.

BIO

Montréal-based painter Jessica Mensch’s work investigates notions of identity within the context of portrait and figure painting. Additionally, she composes and performs collaborative theatrical pieces loosely based
on dreams, current political issues and predictions of the future. Mensch has exhibited and performed in various group shows in Montréal, Toronto and Halifax. Mensch received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She currently works as a freelance portrait artist and oil painting teacher, and paints theatre sets for the Segal and Centaur Theatre’s in Montréal, Québec. Mensch has exhibited and performed in various group shows in Montréal, Toronto and Halifax.

THE WRONG FEELING will be her first solo exhibition

BONFIRE EXPLANATIONS, the new show by Gordon Hull, explores a combination of media. It begins with a performance in which the audience is invited to play a game of ‘obstacle pong’- ping pong in which objects are added to the table while play takes place- against Abbou Belghazi (The Great Belghazi), who is an alter ego/collaborator of Hull. This is both an exercise in the creation of a sculpture as well as a collaborative effort between Hull and his “opponent.” Each match is photographed and consulted and from these photographs the sculpture is created at the end of the night, using the matches as individual drafts or sketches for the final work. In addition to the performance and its resulting sculpture, there will be a process drawing of the performance/act as well as a photograph, a collage and a pile of dinosaur bones. BONFIRE EXPLANATIONS seeks to explain the nature of a fire; its reason for being as well as its meaning as a shapeshifting, living breathing entity whose capacity for motion, passion and fury mirrors our own internal embers.

Gordon Harrison Hull was born September 5, 1977 in New York as the result of a pregnancy brought about by a fertility dress made specifically for his mother by an Ashanti witch doctor in Ghana. He was raised on an apple farm in Warwick, New York and lives and works in New York and Paris. He is co-founder and creative director at large for the creative group Surface to Air. His work – inspired by the rituals, mysticism and craft of Africa – is based on a concept of aesthetic he calls “lo-fi magic” and explores instances of natural magic, exercises of the supernatural, symbolism and ceremony. The role of the artist as the Trickster figure in contemporary culture.

He most recently completed his first new york solo exhibition at Partners and Spade, september 2009.

In (de)celebration of the Vancouver Olympic Games, Red Bird will be holding all-night events that follow a mandate of exploring the role of play and subversion in the expression of dissension towards nationalist and corporate hierarchical systems. All are invited to attend, participate, voice their opinions, or remain silent and peruse the many free, free-form and freely associated events that highlight community, play, and the role of site-specificity over and above the celebration of a nationalized ethos of competition!
